Div 2

We Woz Robbed! (Bats 1-2 YMCA)

Div 8 Gemma Hartmann1 26 & 27/4/2010 Match Reports Game 3It might be fun to stay at the YMCA, but it wasn’t much fun losing to them in the last minute of the game yesterday! With Cara confined to the sideline with injury, Devon was brave (or crazy) enough to don the gloves for the game – and earned herself the player of the match accolade in the process. After YMCA struck the post twice in the first half (the first time from the penalty spot – it seems Devon’s alcohol-infused breath did actually put them off!), it looked as though a bit of luck might finally be coming our way, three games in.

With the game goalless at half time, coach Dena rallied the troops and we responded with a much improved second half. Our luck started to wane with another penalty conceded for handball in the box (that’s three in two games against us – surely we are now due one up the other end?! Not even Alice could win one after being kicked in the HEAD whilst lying on the ground!!!). This time Devon’s bad breath didn’t do the trick, although the fact that the 1st penalty taker opted out of this one surely meant that she had been suitably scarred by her encounter with Devon in the first half.

At 1-0 down, we took the game to YMCA. With some good running from Angie, Erin and Sue in midfield and our forwards putting pressure on their backline, we edged closer to an equaliser. Anna started to push forward from the back to give us an extra attacking option, and the pressure eventually told when Kerry struck a sweet shot from 25 yards. 1-1 = Game On Moles! With YMCA visibly deflated, it looked as though only one team was going to win the game. As we made a final push for an equaliser, YMCA were awarded a free kick about 30 yards out. Up stepped their sweeper to welly it high and long, and not even Devon’s lanky legs could keep it out. With only a minute and a half to go, YMCA held on to break Bats’ hearts. Now we’re really mad…

DIV 8

Bats Down Sydney Uni 2-0 with Relative Ease

So we’re a player down, huh? And they are a “spritely” bunch? And, this away jersey color really does everything but flatter the looks of all Div 8 players.  It could possibly be challenging, so we thought we might as well get to the scoring right away. The Sydney Uni defense proved amiable, and we put them to work.  After a series of attacks that would easily have been goals last week, Bats forwards were cursing and aghast at their own inefficiency. That was good keeping, someone said. And it was. From the narrow point of view of the forward line (Claire Madrid, Dan, Stine), we were not playing Sydney Uni. We were playing the all too good goalie, Ali. Some intelligence was required. Near the end of the first half, it finally worked. After a great goal kick from Kel, we manoeuvered easily through the defense. Stine had the wisdom not to challenge her nemesis Ali again, but flicked the ball to a perfectly positioned Dan, who booted in the 1-0. Finally!

Even with 10 players, our team was solid in all respects throughout the game. Kim, Nic and Claire in the defense picked the ball off Sydney Uni attackers reliably, and the few times they got the chance to finish there was really no worry. Their goalie was good, but nothing compared to ours. There is really no concern with Kel behind you! Heroism points were due even more in the midfield. A player short, Bec, Loui and Katja had to play a swarm of Uni kids – but they were everywhere, and won the ball most of the time. Katja – alone in the middle – kept shuffling that ball upwards seemingly oblivious that 8 of the Uni players were trying to take it off her. Player of the game!

The second half really only needed the one event it had. Loui scored magnificently, directly, from the corner flag, setting the score at 2-0. She’s a star!
